BEN LEE: Just saw The Hunger Games...some thoughts...

benleemusic:

I am glad this is a teen phenomena. Seems to me to be a modern-day parable about liberation of consciousness in much the same way The Matrix was. The way it struck me was a story about people born/forced into the illusion of competitive society. Us. We are all sold this story from a very young…

Day 23: Favorite villain [classic and new]

I just really like the Daleks, okay.  I love the way they look, the way they sound, the  way they’re pure evil who will destroy anything different.  I love that they will never die, I love that they fit perfectly with anthropological monster theory.  I love that they will never give up until they are the only life forms in the universe, I love that to them, that’s not evil, that’s perfection.   I love that they’ve been around since 1963 and are still terrifying.

My good friend, Samantha Hale, interviewed me about 2 years ago for her documentary, “Map the Music.” The project was pretty ambitious and my footage wasn’t able to make the final cut. This was a very understandable decision seeing as artists like Tori Amos, Imogen Heap, Zoe Keating and many others were prominently featured.

Anyways, Sam was recently weeding through some old footage and randomly edited a bit of our interview. I was extremely flattered to see this little piece put together. She’s a talented lady and made me look way cooler than I actually am!!!!

ENJOY!!!!!

KUWABARA PICKUPS donating 100% of profits to Japan relief until July 31st

I’ve recently been turned on to the hottest hand-wound pickups I’ve ever encountered. KUWABARA Pickups! I installed a set into a cheap Mexican Tele and it was transformed into one of my best instruments. I was recently at Tru Tone music ( a Kuwabara retailer ) and was informed that 100% of this company’s profits are being donated to Japan until July 31st. If you are looking for replacement pickups, please look no further. Your heart and your ears will be equally pleased!!

Hello kids,  as some of you may already know, I’ve been the Musical Director of the Hotel Cafe Tour since its inception in 2005. Alright, here are some bullet points and a synopsis so I don’t forget any of the critical information in my cluttered ramblings!

 Film Synopsis:

There is a room in Los Angeles where, every night, something transcendent happens. Depending on the players, folks either trickle in or line up. They huddle close to the stage as the first chords are struck. The evening’s soundtrack unfurls, welcoming anyone within earshot to the Hotel Cafe. That so much musical talent is concentrated in a few hundred square feet in Hollywood bears exploration.

“SING” examines the history of the Hotel Cafe tours and venue through the lens of the 2008 Tour. Anchored from this perspective, this feature-length documentary recounts the history of the venue, the history of the tour, and the relationships of the artists involved. The story unfolds from these multiple perspectives and shows how an intimate room unlike any other, without even a liquor license, went on to stage international tours and create global recognition.

The success each artist has experienced varies, from Grammy winning heights to never having been on the tour bus before. While on tour, each show is a great equalizer: there is no headliner and no hierarchy. The experience forces musicians to share not only their living space, but also the stage and their supporting band. The result is a type of chaotic magic that entices artists to line up side-stage to watch their bunkmates perform, invites collaboration, and creates versions of songs that could never be captured again, evolving before an enraptured audience and recorded only in our film.

Performance footage, photography, and interviews provide a testament to what can only be learned on the road through the bond between musicians and audiences. From the post-show highs to the realities of being a working musician, the stories shared by the artists in the film are unique, yet they all seem to repeat a similar refrain, a lie-down-in-the-road loyalty embodied by one artist’s statement: this room gave me my career.

Jerry Donahue Guitar Lesson / Interview on the art of string bending. All I can say is HOLY SHIT!!!!

March 27, 2011

Here’s an old video that I did for my buddy John Ferrante at FPE when he was reping Michael Kelly guitars. I ended up using this Arena Rose model for many years as one of my primary road acoustics. I particularly used it a lot with Joshua Radin. It really handled the delicate fingerstyle arrangements that Josh’s music required. It also had excellent intonation in the upper register. I could capo above the 7th fret without having to adjust very much at all.

I’m now gifting this guitar to my very talented, bass/cello playing brother. I figured it was time he got a good acoustic guitar.

Anyways, this video features a very early version of my instrumental composition, “Coalition of the Unwilling” as well as an arrangement of John Denver’s “Annie’s Song.” The tuning is critical to both of these pieces and is one of my favourites. Csus2 or Csus9 depending upon how you look at it. The tuning is CGCGCD.

I’m currently working on a more formal lesson on this tuning that I’m planning on posting here. Ok kids….you’ve been warned (and I’ve committed!).
